As Virginia heads into a new legislative session, the General Assembly is poised for membership changes that will shape the Commonwealth’s 2026-2027 landscape. Tuesday’s elections also brought new leadership at the statewide level, with:
Abigail Spanberger (D) winning the race for governor
Ghazala Hashmi (D) winning the race for lieutenant governor
Jay Jones (D) winning the race for attorney general
With Democrats now holding the governorship, Senate, and House of Delegates, Virginia will enter the 2026-2027 session under a Democratic trifecta. These results, alongside changes in the House of Delegates, set the stage for new priorities and perspectives in Richmond.
For government affairs professionals, understanding these shifts early is critical. By building relationships with new members early and strengthening connections with returning legislators, you’ll gain an invaluable edge before the new session begins.
